Haunted
May 23, 2015
Dear Sam, why is it so hard to let go of past hopes and hurts? I know it's over and done with but my mind keeps reviewing it as if I could go back and redo it, which I can't. What can I do to control my thoughts?
Haunted
Dear Haunted, this signature is more appropriate than you realize. It sounds as if you are being held hostage by a “spirit” that refuses to release you into the present reality. This can happen when your emotions about the story become more real and precious than the actual events of that story. It's much like house hoarding, except that yours happens in your mind. Throwing out any memory may be like losing a part of yourself and ending up with no identity. Right now your identity is submerged beneath an ever-growing pile of junk. With help, you have a chance to dig out from under that weight and emerge into the light of day. I really think you will have to find someone to help you answer some questions about why you are so fondly fondling your sufferings, why you can't forgive yourself for perceived errors, why you believe that if you could control events everything would turn out fine. You will have to allow yourself to be unravelled from all those past experiences that seemed so wrong and unfair to you, and begin to hope in a future that holds promise and pleasure. God speaks directly to you when he says “I know the plans I have for you: plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jer. 29:11) Your own plans have let you down, perhaps because they were not in agreement with God's plans. There really is healing for hurts and I hope you will make an effort to dislodge that unholy spirit within you with the true Holy Spirit.
