Worried- October 9, 2010
January 16, 2011

Dear Sam,

My married children don’t take their children to church like I used to. It seems that religion is not included in their lives at all. What can I do to convince them that church attendance is important?
   -Worried-

Dear Worried,

This letter could have been written by thousands of concerned parents and grandparents. Let me ask whether “going to church” is the same as having a relationship with the Almighty, Triune God. What is it exactly that you want for your beloved family?
Church attendance and religious observances can be a superstitious attempt to make life manageable, and to appear acceptable. But that’s not really what Christianity is about.
Did your children watch you exercising faith in God or faith in religious observances? I know that is a hard and maybe an offensive question, but we might as well get right to the core of your concern.
As a Christian, you know that we cannot control the inner life of a person, not even our own. Only the Spirit of God can reach the heart to heal and grow the relationship with Him. If this is what you want for them, then talk to God about it. Let your family see how confident you are about God’s desire and ability to reveal himself to them. When your grandchildren are with you, let them see you engage life in a different way. At some point they may ask about what you think and believe.
God loves your children and grandchildren and wants to make intimate contact with them. Help him by warming their hearts with real encouragement and hope for the future. But first, you have to have that hope yourself. Find another Christian who will pray and hold the faith for you when you are discouraged. Let God pour his love and forgiveness into you. There is nothing more attractive than the quiet confidence that we all yearn for. This real, living God is actively engaged in seeing your whole family come to Life. Know this, hide this truth deep in your heart, and let your faith shine out of you. That’s all you need to do. God will do the rest.
